Mak-Khoom
Continent: Asia.country: Thailand Category: Manipulation game. Number
of players: 2 Props: Little stones
Description
Some children sit in a circle and two girls are playing the game.
Some holes are digged in the sand: five compartments on sides of
the players and two compartments on both left as well as the right
side of them. The outside compartments are used by the players to
keep their winning stones in. The other ten holes are for playing.
In every hole are five stones. The game starts by bringing their
hands in front of them, having a certain finger formation. The finger
formations they present now have significance: the clenched fist
represents ‘stone’, the flat hand ‘paper’, and the two extended
fingers ‘scissors’. If both players chance to produce the same sign
it is a ‘wash out’, and they try again. But if they produce different
signs one of them inevitably wins since it is held that ‘stone’
blunts and thus beats ‘scissors’; ‘scissors’ cut and thus conquer
‘paper’; and ‘paper’ wraps round and thus triumphs over ‘stone’.
This form of elimination often goes under the name of the sounds
with which they synchronise their movements. (like: ‘Ding, Dang,
Dong’) The player who wins, starts the game. She may start with
any hole she likes to start with. She then take all stones out of
that particular compartment and puts -clockwise- one by one the
stones in the other compartments. If she has no more stones left
in her hand, then she takes the stones of the very first compartment
and continues in putting those stones also in the compartments.
When the last stone in her hand is put in a compartment with stones
and the very next compartment is empty, then she may take the stones
out of the compartment next to the empty-one. She puts these stones
in her ‘safety compartment’ at her right/left, depending where she
sits. Each player has one safety compartment to keep her winning
stones. When all stones are out of all ten ‘play compartments’,
then they count how many stones they have in their ‘safety compartment’
and the winner is who has most of the stones.
